I'll be shaping while there between Kauai, Maui and Oahu, with a limit on the amount of orders I can take but there should be room for plenty of orders if we chat and get order details sorted out before early March. I've already ordered a small pile of custom midlength blanks to Maui and will be doing most of my work there at my buddy Josh Weisfeld's (JAW Retro) shop. If you are located in the Islands and are looking for a board and the timing is good for you, the timing is good for me so lets chat and hash out some details!
I've been shaping doubletime the past few weeks here at home to get ahead of my orders, so any orders already placed and in my list will either be finished ahead of time or right on the estimated finish date from when your order was placed. It's been a haul getting all this in place but I couldn't be more excited to take an extended voyage and see some friends and family around the islands with my newly minted wife!
<span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;">I can't sum up the past week, its been a total haze. The passing of my father at the age of 64 came as a complete surprise to everyone around him. No health issues to speak of, no history of heart problems, no warnings, just an early weekday spent working on his house. My father suffered a heart attack while building his new home - and when I say building his new home, I can't stress enough what that means. The small piece of land was his 'last project', the one he would grow old with. He purchased the couple acres of forested land a few years ago and started to pick the trees off of it with chainsaws and tractors. He then spent a year cutting, milling and drying those logs; this is the wood he used to begin building his new home. Walking around in circles this week considering the scope of his project opened windows in mine and my two brothers minds about the scope then, of his whole life, and exactly how much power it took to conquer what he had. <span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; text-align: center; white-space: pre-wrap;">That one project was a massive undertaking by anyones imagination - to then remember back farther becomes shocking, almost frightening.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">

<span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">My father considered this project doable, and had no reservations about his ability to do it, because he had done it before. This was roughly his 5th home-buiding project in 40 years. He raised us construction zones, homes which he would remodel, reconfigure, rebuild, or imagine completely. Bringing them to life with his own two hands and the help of the family and friends he could convince to lend their time. I believe that one of these projects alone would have convinced any normal human that they had done enough. I believe that replacing the cabinets alone in one house would be enough for a normal person, he though was not so normal.
<span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">He did these things while raising three sons and connecting a world of artists by way of his lithography business, Stone Press Editions. Stone Press was considered the place to be for artists in the pacific northwest, the air seemed thick with imagination and sweat, darts, ink, heavy paper and leather aprons, at least as I remember it. He printed for the masters, Jacob Lawrence, Robert Bateman, Russell Chattham, Dale Chihuly, and dozens more. He was considered a master by anyone's judgement, though mastery of anything never seemed to be the goal. <span style="background-color: white; color: #4b4f56; font-family: "helvetica neue" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">He always seemed then to create more, and more. It was rarely all good times, but he took comfort and taught us the importance in getting the know that shadows as well as the light. The whole picture was what he was in love with - he knew well in his later years that he could not love the sunshine without romancing the darkness as well. I am scared and sad, though now I realize how large his footstep are, and how naturally his three sons seem to fill them. In the past years, he found true happiness. It seemed to us that the stress he had carried for years had passed, and his gaze had lowered into a peaceful place - I keep saying to myself that he was up on plane, like a well designed surfboard or boat. Life seemed to stop grabbing at him, perhaps his deepest project was finished. I don't know. I do know he spilled love. He poured his gratitude over those he cared for, and made his feelings and appreciations well known to us all. He said many things in the past number of year that I had never heard him say before. He made us all so proud. My father was superman of the heart, mind and hand. He is unrivaled, and still here.

I've been working on a pair of experimental boards inspired by two of my favorite space-cadets, Mick Mackie and George Greenough. I spent the first half of this winter riding a 7'10 edge gun (GG kind, big edge, flat deck, fat rails), and have more recently had my mind bent by a 6'10 Mackie sidecut fish (EPS). The two boards at first glance share little in common, but after spending some really flawless and similar days on both boards I found the sensations and attributes of each weren't too far apart, and could likely borrow from each other somehow. Both boards have an extreme hydroplane effect - the Mackie using the front end of the board for paddle power and lift, then the side-cut and tail providing all the looseness and speed one could ever ask for once the board is on plane (of course, this is oversimplifying the complexities of the design).

The edge bottom gun does something similar in the way that the front end of the board provides seemingly limitless amounts of lift, and the tail end is the operating zone, where you pilot this big missile-board from (oversimplified but you get the idea).

Being that our local waves are fast, smallish, and steep, both boards seemed to have small drawbacks that didn't limit the boards potential, but absolutely opened doors in my mind for how to modify the shape to explore something new for myself that might kind of work. Like I said this is an experiment, and to quote GG, "nothing ventured, nothing gained."
I want to be clear also, that the design here was meant to accomplish one thing - Lots of connectivity, with extremely clean realease while planing at high speed in above average, fast, down the line conditions. The idea wasn't to make the perfect board, but to chase a feeling. 'Peak Moments', as Mick describes them. Maxed out sensations in specific situations and conditions.
The idea was to take the Mackie's tail end which felt flawless and fast, and use the edge bottom design to lift the forward part of the outline out of the water once at speed - thus lessening the effect of the slight bulge in the outline while driving hard down the line off the front foot.

Just before Mick left Santa Barbara a few weeks back, he and I got a chance to visit a small collection of 80's Greenough windsurfers that had just been purchased by a local collector - After thinking about mashing these two designs together it hit me that a big, releasing wing like the ones on George's old high-speed sail boards would provide the necessary room for the tail end of this idea to operate on its own, and at the same time allow some of the extremeness of the outlines curves to be lessened - The hard edge nose to tail on Mick's fish was basically stretched and narrowed, then set into the outline of a kind of speed-egg of sorts.
The venture here was not to make a board that was better or perfect or even super 'useable' - but more to see if I couldn't combine some of the new favorites in my quiver, that seemed like they could enjoy some of the benefits of the other, and make an excruciatingly fast, positive, responsive SOMETHING that would keep me entertained and excited during a few week long flat spell. Lots of my favorite boards have come out of a need to shake it up a little and this pair follows suit. Averaging 2-3 hand-shaped boards per day 5-6 days a week, shaking it up a bit every now and then is a must!
There is a lot more physical exploration to do with these (by that I mean surfing!) and I'm hesitant to say too much before they've been surfed into the ground, but after a few sessions on the 7' (shaped out of Varial foam) I'm extremely optimistic about the smaller (EPS foam), which should hit the water tomorrow as this swell fills in. So far it feels lively and connected off the tail, with the highlight of a ride being a biiiiig long swooping kind of line top to bottom. We've been filming the sessions, and there will be a follow up video of the build and first few surfs with multiple different surfers - we'll have to be patient for that one, as the waves have to cooperate too ;)

The 5'8 ( x 19" x 2 1/2") EPS foam, epoxy resin. Double layer 4oz bottom, 6+4oz deck with a carbon deck patch, and the carbon flex tail. This tail's flex is much snappier, and the length of the panel shorter, figuring that since its a smaller board, it'll be surfed in shorter, quicker lines than the larger version. After surfing the 7', I'm encouraged about the possibilities of the 5'8.

You can see a clip of Trevor Gordon swooping on the 7' here:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BPbWHlNlCl-/?taken-by=ryanlovelace

Me on one of the better waves I got during the first session, lots of speed to burn, though theres little accounting for the turd trying to burn it :)

I thought I'd take a minute here to explain a few differences between two shapes that I've been getting tons and tons of questions about - the v.Bowls, and the re.Bowls. 'The v.B' being the veteran here, and the 're.B' being the newcomer to the party; hopefully you're decently keen on the characteristics of what the v.B does and why its become so popular (really solid paddle power for their dimensions, extra loose ball-bearing kinda roll rail to rail, locked in trim from the center with insane drive off the back foot).
The Trimcraft brand/project has become a little bit of an outlet for some new and old designs that haven't gotten enough of my attention due to how busy my shapign scheudle has been the past year or so, and I was excited to lend the re.Bowls design to the shapers as a bit of a technical challenge, and a really good design to master a few difficult curves that I've found extremely useful.
So with that all said, its important to note that the re.B was designed as a compliment, not as a substitute or replacement for the v.B and hopefully the following notes are helpful in learning the differences and why they exist:

Deck Shape:
v.B: Super dome from the center to tail, long flat nose (this is where a lot of the extreme foiling of the shape comes into play).
re.B: Flatter under the back foot, slightly more nose rocker (more forgiving, less ball bearing feel).

Bottom
v.B: Mellow belly/roll from the nose through the middle, with the curve apexing into a panel vee or spiral vee in the last 1/3 of the board (super fast in trim, lots of smooth and long projection off the bottom).re.B: Mellow roll in the first 2' of the board, transitioning quickly into a triplane bottom with double concave through the back foot (quicker release when 'pumping', quicker transitions and better trim speed on flat sections of a wave; again, this plays into the lessening of the magical narrow-stance ball-bearing effect while adding to the shapes useability for beginner/intermediate surfers).

Rails
v.B: High in the nose, pinched 50/50 at middle, low/down in the tail with hard edge (important for the super fast trim they are known for).re.B: High in the nose, transitioning quickly into 70/30 down rails through the rest of the board, down rail with hard edge in the tail (good speed on flat waves, quicker to release the rail from the face of the wave, more forgiving for beginners/intermediate surfers).

Rocker
v.B: Long and low, with accelerating curve in the last 1/3 of the board.
Hopefully they are gateway drugs into each other, as any good pairing is!
-RyanAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13773972692834083692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1386557381683317953.post-54832204830474600162016-06-20T14:12:00.000-07:002016-06-20T14:12:07.589-07:00v.Bowls Fin Placement Notes

After 5 years of v.Bowling in anything and everything, here is my best advice for fin placement and sizing on most v.bowls at this time. I have a few variations on the v.Bowls fin - the 8.5" and the 9", both in thick or thin foil, this blurb covers those four options. This is not a list of commandments, but a reference for you from my experience and talking with others. Suitable substitutions in a pinch are also the Greenough 4a, and Skip Frye 8.5" flex fin from true ames.

For lighter to medium weight surfers or shorter, quick waves (beach break, weird reefs, or most any windswell waves) use the 8.5” thin foil v.bowls fin placed in the center or towards the back 1/3 of the box (for boards up to 7’6). for boards over 7’6 go to the 9”. for boards 7’2 and under add the FCS bonzer side bites to the thin foil 8.5” if you have the option for more release off the top and more response from quicker pumps.

use the thick foil versions for heavier surfers or more powerful carving in good waves. Place the 9” in the center to slightly forward of center in the box.

Use the 9’ thick (heavy footers) or thin (most surfers) foil in all v.bowls over 7’10.

For reference, I’m 6’2 and 195 lbs - I ride the thick foil 8.5” plus fcs bonzer side bites in my 7’2; thick foil 8.5” in my 7’4 (single fin), and thin foil 9” in my 8’ (single fin).

Two great rules of thumb for fin placement to start: place the trailing edge of the fin, in inches, the distance that the fin is tall; so for a 9” fin, go 9” off the tail. This is a good rough starting point.

If the board feels too loose or like its letting go from the bottom turn too soon, move the fin back. if the board feels like it doesn’t release when you lay off the bottom turn, or like its tracking/has a mind of its own or a small anchor under it, move the fin forwards. Move it in increments of 1/4” until it feels like a rocket ship thats reading your mind.

This would open the door for multi-million dollar housing and potentially CLOSE the coastline to public access and endangered species. If we don’t act now, over 1,000 MILES of protected coastline is in danger of development and closure.

Dr. Lester is the predecessor of the late Peter Douglas. Peter Douglas was “an aggressive and hard-nosed environmentalist, who spent more than 25 years running the commission and advocating forcefully for its independence. Months before his death in 2012, Douglas chose Lester from within the ranks of the agency as his successor, and the commission appointed him unanimously in 2011”. Dr. Lester has maintained what Peter fought for: “Public access to the coast so that it wasn't just something that belonged to the rich," said Warner Chabot, former executive director of the California League of Conservation Voters. "Probably his greatest achievement wasn't what you see," he added, "but rather a political achievement … He created a commission that enabled citizens to take direct action to protect their coast and be seen as equals with the very rich and powerful landowners along the coast” (Woo, Elaine).

My favorite round pin template used as the nose and tail template to make an identical 50/50 outline. glider style 70/30 down rails, triplane bottom with deep double concave through the tail. Was going for a mini-glider kinda thing, with lots of hold and bite on the rail to handle steeper sections - have always liked more foiled out glider type boards, and this proved a good time to explore one. Vs. the v.bowls - Thick Lizzy rides high on the water's surface and planes out faster in lower-quality surf; can also be cheater-fived for miles. We've found it to be a good compliment to the v.bowls as a longer alternative with a different approach to rail line and foil distribution. Katie and I built a new shaping room/hangout/showroom/studio in downtown Santa Barbara over the past few weeks. Its been in the works for quite some time, but its finally done and today I shaped the first board in my new room, which was full of jitters and adjustments.

The major difference in the new space is the lack of a glassing zone. Its been just shy of 10 years glassing the majority of my own boards, and I've tried to keep up with that as best I can over the past few years; though with all the shaping on the road I've been having my friends down at Jeff Hull's shop in Ventura glass handfuls of my boards here and there to help me keep up between trips. Jeff actually glassed the second board I ever shaped, as I had decided glassing wasn't for me after number 1...then I ate my words and fell in love with it but thats neither here nor there!

The last few years of the travel-shaping thing has taught me a lot about having other folks glass my boards as I don't glass on the road usually - its built a lot of trust in me and shown me a different way to live my life - when I'm on the road, my task is simple, and straightforward, and enjoyable, and still totally exciting. Its shown me that I can let go of the thought that I have to glass all of my own boards to be totally proud of them.

From where I stand these days, in order to keep my sanity and health I have a few options; to either glass all my own boards raise my prices and attempt to quell the amount of orders I've got - or I can keep grinding away seven days a week in my one room shop with a few helping hands when necessary, which hasn't reeeeeally been working for me. I'm not currently as happy and involved in my own life as I'd like to be, so continuing on my current path looks like prolonged over-stressing and eventual burnout in the next year or two. Continuing to glass them all and raising my prices I think would defeat a lot of things that I enjoy about building surfboards - I like being accessible, I like kids in high school saving up to buy a board and coming out to order it, I like people discovering what a v.Bowls will do to their surfing, I like my boards being custom but not "boutique". I think I'd harsh that entire mellow by pricing boards too high, and thats no good.

SO my solution is rather simple, lessen my glassing as much as I can, and let a handful of guys I trust glass the shit out of my boards from here on out.

I still have my glassing space, but my glass work will focus back on experimental ideas and boards where people specifically request that I glass it - which is fine by me, but it'll take a little extra time if thats cool with ya'll.

This is a transition thats been coming for years, and I've tried a million ways to avoid it, but the timing is right, and I've settled with the things I need to in order to shift gears and now I'm excited to do it this way. The guys down in ventura have glassed enough of my boards to know how to do what I like. I stand behind their work and trust them with my boards, and I always like employing good people, so this won't be too hard!

Two little shorts of uber homie Simon Murdoch on a twin fin Piggyback - the first clip is his first session on the board, and the latter the two settled in a bit. I couldn't believe that was Simon's first go on that board, and more, that style of board - Worth noting. There have been some radically hilarious rumors about me and how this all works; the best being that I come from a wealthy family and have a trust fund - which would be a great conclusion to jump to, and is completely untrue, so I'll break it down; 5 years ago I was lucky enough to be invited to shape in Portugal by Rui Ribeiro at Magic Quiver Surf Shop. He ordered a handful of boards, enough for me to pay for my plane ticket to and from, Nico (Wavegliders Surfboards), the shaper I would be staying and working alongside offered me a bed to crash on, so I jumped at the chance - that ended up growing into a visit to work in France the next year, and then a stop to work on the East Coast in New Jersey on the way home - this is the blueprint for every year since, and it keeps growing. Enough work for a plane ticket, enough time, and whatever floor or couch or *fingers crossed* bed, is available, and I'm there.

Magic Quiver as well as other shops all over the world do the same with many other shapers. Rich Pavel and Malcolm Campbell have been on similar travels yearly now for a long time and have opened huge doors for other shapers to do the same. Fortunate is a word that comes to mind, and I do my best to put my head down and work for my opportunities; to build good surfboards so that I'm asked to come back and do it again. Its rare that I get to surf great waves along the way, though I have gotten lucky here and there! I'm normally shaping 13 or 14 days on end, and on the 15th I'm gone and extremely grateful, hands raw, totally exhausted and exhilarated - Last year I shaped nearly 200 boards on the road in 4 months - To say that I love my work is an understatement, and to be able to do it on the road is a great privilege. This year is the first year I've been given a hand for the Voyage, and its offering me to opportunity to travel to a few more out of the way spots and make some more experimental boards on the road - Stetson has been an extremely nice partner to develop a relationship with and I'm humbled by their support and faith.

The generosity and openness of people I've met makes me excited to start again every summer. It never ceases to amaze me how welcome people make me feel and what they so easily share - stories, experiences, wisdom, and new opportunities seem endless.
So if you want, and you try, and you aren't afraid to work, you don't need a magical bank account or a grand scheme - build lots of human relationships and keep surfers happy, they are always hungry for new boards. I grew up a very shy and quiet kid, and one thing life so far has proven is that if you open yourself, others will open to you.
