Ramble On

A sweet little sequence from Ian Echternacht of Spencer Lyon on a 6'11 hullibut.

This one had a few hidden curves that proved to work well for Spencer; not as tick in the rails around the mid section which tends to slow boards down...Which is always nice for slipping into some tubes every now and then.

Stage III Finished

You've got to go through hell before you get to heaven.

Function over form, always.  This one may not be too pretty to the average surfer, but I think it's beautiful, prefect.  Brand new and full of bondo.  It's a prototype. Deal with it :)

Oh Hai!

Lots of times I'll lend out my 6'9 hull/fish to chaps who don't know what to order...they describe themselves as flow oriented, all around surfers who drive off their front foot but can't really lay down a full railed 7' hull cutback and want lots of the same feelings and drive with a bit more ability to get tubed and make more critical drops.

...Enter the hull/fish thing (it's been unnamed for 3 years now...deal with it!) is my oldest board and it goes mental...I've loved it and trusted it in any waves since the day we met (When I was still shaping/glassing/sanding/pinlining/glossing  in the boatyard alone...fathom that one!).

Aaaaanyways, that board has introduced a lot of people to hulls and the derived designs that I do which share the same concepts.  i'd venture to say around 20 individuals have sprung hull addictions off that board (incidentally it was the linking board between the OG design and Pinky).  

So this is a custom from one of those happy intoducee's...6'4" x 20" x 2 7/8" low rocker, thin rails, hulled out bottom with my favorite double to single concave breaking up the flow...my favorite and most involved bottom shape that works like kittens.

I've finally got the english translation that my (fantastic and wonderfully helpful) sister in law did of my Blue Magazine (Japan) article in an online format, give it a read.  originally written and photographed by the fantastic Mr.Tomita!

I made a short video walkthrough of a hull that I just shaped, I don't think still photos do these boards justice so I thought I'd have a go at it with video.  It took me three takes to not sound like a total asshat:

Glidezilla

Here is Mr.T with the big hunk of foam I just shaped for him.  He will be taking it to his favorite surf spots, and subsequently dropping a glide-bomb all over the faces of his fellow surfers.

It measures in at 11' x 23" x 3 1/4" and has thr33 stringers, observe: 

It is extremely foiled out, and has very little rocker for a board of it's length...this is an 11' hull for all intents and purposes; it has the same rails as my current 7' blade.

I am very proud to say that I shaped it...don't let anyone tell you that someone has to teach you everything you know...just buy a blank and try something out, you may end up somewhere pretty fun and make yourself pretty happy by the end of the day.  

First New Model for 2010

This board really has nothing to do with there being a new year, and everything to do with experimentation and inspiration from old movies.

Trevor and I have been keen to shape something new and funky for a couple months since we finished his pintail, and after a 5'2 gull got ordered and shipped off to Japan, we found our starting point!  

We ended up with a 5'4" x 19 3/4" x 2 3/4" super nug, thats being dubbed the Gullet; it began with a Gull template, using the same arc-tail i've been using for 3 years, then we cut a foot out of it and narrowed her down, boxed up the rails, curved out the rocker a little, kept the s-deck and put a trusty and flowing tri-plane bottom on it to keep the hull flow and vibe going, while adding a whole lot of versatility in short and punchy waves. 

Still wearing our glassing duds, covered in dust and wreaking of resin, we packed the finished board into the van and drove about 200 yards as the crow flies from my shop to a top secret wave...The result is contained is here in T's first wave on it last week:

...Fast off the bottom, flowy, and more funk than September.

Trevor got his art-on with the art and we did a pretty intense thrift-store dress-shirt fabric inlay on the bottom...

I am floored about this board, the response from Trevor so far is really great and we had a great week of waves to test it in, lots of varrying conditions; I'm sold on it and will highly recommend it to anyone emailing me and asking for something hullish and uber fun but not a full-dedicated point wave board.

..This board is all about grooving and finding a fun and clean line...and I'm glad to introduce it as the first new model for next year!

Superbad

I've been pondering this board for a while now, and FINALLY it's ready to go.
The pink stringerless blank sat in my shaping room for a good two months or so because the color wasn't QUITE what I had in mind...I was hoping for a dark red, when I got a pink 7'3 blank, I was a little put off.
It sat and sat, until I decided I had to do it before the AB3. Once I decided that a twin finned hull is a good thing (its a GREAT thing), it was a go.
I wanted to hide as much of the color as I could, without detracting from the stringerless-ness of it (its always nice to see it). I ended up doing an unside down opaque deck with a SUPER dark brown, then left the bottom clear.

The pinlines are the product of frustration...I had planned on doing a billion curves over the whole bottom, but once I layed down the initial curves I decided that I didn't much care for them. The tape was all pulled off the board and I was back at step 1...so I thought of the most simple, dead-straight pinlines that I could do, while keeping it classy and not looking like a fruity jail cell.
What came out looks like a very expensive candy bar.
