Spend The Time
I got a little screening of Andrew Kidman's Lost in the Ether last night and WHOA.
Go buy it, watch it, or find it from a smart friend who owns it, then go buy it yourself.
Honestly, for my brain and the way I process information, it was outrageously good.
Rarely are surfers so eloquent, well spoken and educated on their topic of discussion; there is no doubt that Kidman and the guys care deeply about the causes they are championing.
Litmus was fantastic, but Lost in the Ether [for me] will be eternal.

Communication
A week and some days ago I broke my ankle and have since been finding myself behind the lens for hours at a time while the guys trim the evenings away...The views have been mind bending and somehow I don't mind that I'm beached.
...Glad I'm having fun because otherwise some of the stuff I've seen over the past week would start getting real frustrating right about now...
...I wonder how I'll feel next week...?

Flex Bowls
Connor | 9' d.Bowls with a Velzy Classic fin:
I've been wanting to try this setup for a loooong time on this exact d.Bowls in particular, which is pretty transition-era-y, with a narrower nose, shorter than average length and a lighter glass job...This little puppy has inspired a few new ideas I'm pretty excited to explore in the next few months, especially heading into summer.

Decoding
Connor got to spend an afternoon surfing with Derek Hynd a few weeks back and I think something rubbed off. I shot this of him on my Timberline Hullibut
(EPS core and Paulownia skins w/parabolic rails) the other day.

From Emptiness to Everything
Morgan shot these last year of a 6'4" WRP (2+1 widowmaker setup); a board I've shaped for a few people here and there and has it's roots in the very early stages of my shapin'. I've always loved these two shots together, the whole set of them is killer, I know I seem to play with colors 99% of the time but sometimes there is just no denying a board that's just built to WORK.

1967-1971 In Motion
Here's something that's been captivating me lately. If you have the curiosity and can see the subtleties you'll hopefully find the same...
Watch this clip from the Hot Generation (1967), watch the way they use their rails and surf the wave; the lines they're drawing and the TYPES of waves they're surfing. the subtle (and sometimes not) style and flow.
Then watch this...TWO years later. thats TWO seasons of surfing, check the DRASTIC change in the same surfers, same general waves and check out the progression this crew was making.
Notice the edges and shapes that were catching in the first video, then check the changes in shape and curves in these boards...still longer shapes, flat rockers, more curvaceous and more flow. In particular check out 1:30-1:38, the bottom turn to top, then deep cutback...gnarly:
THEN this. Ted Spencer is a good one to watch through the three videos, same basic style; different use of the wave all together. Same stance, knees, hands everything...different rythm and flow.
Only 4 years apart. It blows my mind what these guys did. Also notice that through all 3 videos different guys used shared the same board... Indicating to ME that they weren't just popping out boards, they thought them through, crafted them together, and rode them together.
A seriously beautiful way to do it and a really interesting progression and way to see it in a visual form which I don't see too often; articles and photos are great but to see it so plainly really paints a clear picture for someone that has a more visual thought process.

Lets Get Vague
Above and beyond all this is still my personal blog, so sometimes you guys have to sit through my wandering words 'till i post up the surf goods...and if you've been following my bl0rg for a bit you may have noticed a tendency to post something along those lines right about now every year.
That being said, I can't thank my dear friends and family and herbie enough for providing me with a life full of creative freedom and strength.
Somehow I've been lucky enough to compile everything that is important in my life into the means that keep me alive and well (...mentally, though, the jury is still out, I suppose). I live a very charmed life fueled by love and passion for every day and the adventures that come and go throughout them. I shudder to think what my life would be if I had followed anything other than my curiosities and peculiarities to where I find myself at this moment.
I have goals for the next 6-12 months ahead and I won't divulge them yet, they will be another chapter in my story though and I hope I can lead others by example with them.
I am blessed. I am so. so. blessed. Thank you all for providing me with inspiration and the ability to trust myself in knowing that any passion I follow will carry me as far as I want to go.
Happy 1/1/11 everyone, be well and make decisions out of strength, never fear.

Intuition and Reassurance
A number of years ago my friend Hiten passed the novel Siddartha on to me while I was feeling a bit lost. After reading it I made a few decisions about who I wanted to be and how I wanted to conduct myself in life; I gave myself a direction, I guess. A month ago I picked it up and read it again for the first time in a little while...I wanted to see if I was living up to the hopes that I had for myself...I was reassured as I read along.
Every year I write a blog post on New Years eve, to be posted the next morning. It takes on different forms every time and serves as an open and honest thank you to everyone around me that helps fuel my "job" [ha.]. I took a look back at last year's post to see what I had written and what I was feeling around then and was glad, once I gave it a gander, to feel like I've lived up to the goals that I set for myself at that time. And to know that I made some extremely tough decisions to keep myself in line with those ideals.
I told myself to follow my passions and curiosities and trust in people's goodness as long as I held my end of the bargain as well. I told myself to be honest and open with people, and to share with my friends my opportunities and thoughts. Again I'm reassured as I think back on my last year.
I made one decisions in particular that tested every bit of my will and commitment to being honest to myself and to what I want from life. Leaving my Point Concept to the past was a choice I made in early 2010 that was based on some revelations made early in the year; It was a hard way to reverse a mistake but one that had to happen no matter the circumstances it put me in.
I can honestly say that I have followed my passions to the best of my ability, and am pushing the boundaries of the life that I thought possible.
I do my best to give everyone a window into my journey, and to work my buns off in the shop, behind the camera and on the internet-machine to keep everyone satisfied; and everyone includes me. I'm chasing something for myself. I don't know what it is, but the path is through surfboards and the questions they keep presenting. I'm entering the new year excited for the amount of work I am capable of and the new space I have to perform it in, and grateful that you all keep putting the challenge in front of me so readily.
Happy New year everyone. I'll start the new blog-year off with a short edit I did from some footage Michael Kew gave me a few months ago...I've been saving this one in my back pocket for a while, waiting for some reason to let it out of the bag. Seems like a good time for that.
Fullscreen this one and turn it up...it'll increase your mellow:
