As Gently As You Please

...And I lost the taste for judging right from wrong.

You can wear your furr like a river on fire, but you better be sure if you're making god a liar,

I'm a rattlesnake babe, I'm like fuel on a fire

So if you're gonna get made, don't be afraid of what you learn.

Losing Your Focus

(photo: a.Swanson)

Opportunity emerges through the blurred edges of your vision, the turning of your head, a shift of vision; Rarely does it come at you straight between the eyes.
Lose some focus, and let your life pour through the fringes.

#960

(t.revor gordon, last week)

Funny, how every year the opportunity for progression of surfboards and self seem to grow; I always wonder if that will have been the most productive and joyous year to date; if the energy will soon dissipate.
Then the unthinkable happens, without fail. That next step/occurrence/year blows it away. It's unrelenting.
I'm starting to think that age/time is quite relative, it's all an expanding timeline of progress and learning; maybe we should stop celebrating every year, and celebrate every day instead.

Be Present.

...Feels like climbing a ladder that only gets more stable the farther we get away from the ground. The earth is a good reference point below you, but the only experience that truly matters is the rung that we find ourselves grasping in this exact moment. It's your choice to climb, stop, or retreat back to earth.

up.
up.
and away, friends.

While We're...

...At it, here's Kew's new 5'3 t.rev, also heading for a remote corner of the India Ocean in the next handful of days...Good luck campers, may the tube god's be with you...

(Tank the cat, shortly after sniffing and deeming worthy, pissed all over the tail of the board, claiming it for his own. We were humbled and I was beyond honored. Thanks Tank.)

the ThrougHull

100% hand shaped, laminated, hotcoated, finboxed, sanded and polished by RL for Trevor Gordon and his upcoming trip to the Indian Ocean:

This one's 6'7"; A widepoint-centered hull with pinched rails, some forgiving [fatter] tail foil-age and a continuous, mellow rocker. She's shaped and built for controlled, ultra-trimmed-out-tube-riding and warping gaffs in crystal blue water at a rather special little [or not, we hope] wave somewhere in the Indian Ocean as well as having full capabilities here and around Southern California's fine reef and beachbreaks this summer.

Purpose built and 100% custom for a close friend. Couldn't be better.

t.Rev's Down Unda'

Two of the pile of boards I shaped in Byron Bay a few weeks back; 2 + 1 t.Rev's.
One severely foiled out (think shortboard-esque foil), the other foiled like the orig. t.Rev (thicker tail/nose)

Over @ Six Ounce Board Store in Manly, NSW.

and a bonus...Trevor on the Fush (higher perf. foiled out/triplane twin fish) in the new Surfer Magazine via the ever vigilant Morgo Maassen :

Pureness in the Imperfection

Jair Bortoleto kills it.

Based in Brazil, we've never met.
But. We seem to be having a lot of very interesting conversations lately by way of this magical intrn3t. His work is inspiring and close to the hearts of many of the people that find themselves progressing what we all do visually today.
Do yourself a favor and follow what he does, unassuming and simple; his work is deep and more than impressive.

Type his name in google and you'll find him smattered all over the most respected alternative-surf culture interview and portfolio sites:

There are people all over the world who are pushing their local communities and respective surf-cultures to more interesting things than what the magazines are showing us. Jair quicky falls into this category.

his blog is linked in my sidebar-thingy, so keep your eye on it, there's lots of goodness ---->

Standards

Rodrigo's 7' Hullibut.

There is a satisfaction of building an unknown, experimental and odd boards; but the boards that define what I know to be my own personal standards within shaping are the baseline to everything that comes next...

Balances

This is an excercise in surfboards and creativity as much as it is me finding my way as I grow in each detail of my life.

Life is bursting equally with difficulties as it is with opportunity the past couple months; dynamic equilibrium is an interesting thing and it will ultimately keep us sane and well.

Since day one this has been about constant change and progression of self and craft. Nothing more nothing less, and that's what it will come back to again. I've made a small misstep in trust and judgement, its hard and painful but in the grand scheme I'm glad that I did. Lessons learned are the deepest and I seem to only learn in that one and only way. What I preach I have experienced, and I take each lesson happily and openly even if it feels like it's costing my life and sanity.

Never make decisions out of fear or self doubt. If you do it, do it for you, by you, with you, and share your gifts and lessons with the people you hold dear. If you're worth a grain of salt, your gift and effort will be 10 fold in value to someone else. Don't doubt you or your capabilities; you get to make your destiny happen with a decision today, EVERY day.

There is a time to let people in and a time to listen to your gut. Don't let a second pass by in complacency. If relaxation is your goal, relax like a motherf*cker and feel it. Own it.

If you want to make a change, a thing, a connection, a disconnection or experience, tangible or not...just something, something in your head or your heart,

GO.

MAKE.

IT.

KL x RL x IL

Years ago Kyle Lightner and I would sit at his old place under the Carillo hill and watch the Innermost Limits of Pure Fun endlessly while we waited through flat spells and color lams to cure at the boatyard; a particular board caught our attention every time and we would put it on repeat and study it at length; the curves we could see through the film and the way it was moving in the water, trying to surmise what was going on in that boards design that made it SO fast on a few particular waves...it had a different quality, quirky and odd but fast and very interesting to watch move on a good section.

I've had my last Ice9 blank sitting in my shop for well over a year now since they closed; I was using exclusively Ice9 blanks for most all of the boards that I was flowing to Albers, Lightner, Trevor and the guys...I've saved this one for a long time and wanted it to be a perfect fit.

I've been riding this board for the past week now and have clocked some of the most amazing rides I've had all year; specifically on Lightner's birthday a few days ago...Mind blowing lines and some powerful mid face bottom turns through the cove in Ventura.

I do my best not to sound like a hippy but this board is a product of pure inspiration and development in relationships and styles; it feels comforting to own this board that's been in our heads for years.
